Project week05: Hiromi Sato

This month, we have seen billionaires' short space trips repeatedly. Even if it was just a hobby for Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson, these trips exhibited the progress of space exploration by the private sector. And there is one other company we should keep our eyes on. SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, is leading the race to space. It is not listed but already has $74 billion valuations.

Amblin Partners, a film studio led by Steven Spielberg, reached a multi-year deal with Netflix in June. Under this partnership, Amblin will supply new films for the streaming giant every year.

It is a natural expansion for Netflix, which has over 200 million subscribers worldwide.

Eye-catching movies by popular creators are critical to keeping their growth. Even this year, Netflix is releasing new films weekly, including Zack Snyder's zombie movie "Army of the Dead."

However, this deal got significant attention because of Spielberg's controversial statements three years ago. When asked about video streaming services in an interview, he said, "if it's a good show, deserve an Emmy, but not an Oscar." He drew a line between legacy films and films created for streaming services.

What changed his view?; It's a fact.

With a 2013 documentary film titled "Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer", Netflix got the first nomination for Oscars. It was two years after the company decided to focus on the streaming

business instead of DVD rental services. Then, Netflix received an award for documentary features with "Orlando von Einsiedel and Joanna Natasegara" (2016).

The situation has changed rapidly. The award which honored films released in 2019, Netflix got 24 nominations. It was the highest number among studios, surpassing Walt.Disney and Sony Pictures.
