Intro to the Handbook 📕

Why do we need an Engineering Handbook? ⁉️

Simply put, we want to be as transparent as possible, both internally and externally. We want all our potential candidates to have as much information as possible before they decide whether Growth Kitchen is the right place for their next role. We want to share our values and principles, and how we plan on doing things. Even though we’re a young company, particularly in our Engineering department, we know very well the type of team we want to become!

How often is this document updated? 🔁

Quite often, to be fair. You may come back to this page tomorrow and it may not look the same! As with software development, we’ll be adding content to this handbook one step at a time, rather than doing a big-bang release, so please don’t be surprised if you encounter some sections that are incomplete 🙂

Who’s writing this? ✍️

For the time being, Sacha Zvetelman, Head of Engineering at Growth Kitchen (his personal README can be found here). But as soon as we hire more people for the engineering team, we want everyone to help us tell the world more about ourselves and our engineering ideas.

What if I’d like to find out more or perhaps even join you? 🦸🏽‍♀️

Values and Principles ⭐

It’s vital for us that we not only write about values and principles but also live by them. We talk the talk, but we also walk the walk. At Growth Kitchen we have a set of virtues we live by. These values and principles below especially for engineering are complementing the company's virtues!

Voices are heard, no matter the role or seniority 📣

We believe ideas come from everyone, so we want to hear them! We don’t care if you are a Senior Frontend Engineer with ten years of experience in the industry, or if you’re a Junior Test Engineer who’s just starting your career. We don’t follow a top-down communication approach. If anything, the closest you are to the action, the more you know about how to do certain things.

Honesty and transparency 🪟

We strive to be as transparent as possible. From what we’re working on, and how we’re building our engineering products, to things such as career progression opportunities. We believe that in life you make better decisions when you’re well-informed.

We’re honest and we don’t like bullshit. We make mistakes because we’re humans, but always with the truth.

Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (DI&B) 👭

It doesn’t really make sense to have a team comprised of homogenous people. If you were to assemble a team to play football or any other sport, you’d choose people with different characteristics, strengths, experiences, etc. The same concept applies to a company. We want people with different backgrounds, opinions, life experiences, beliefs, abilities and more. This leads to healthier teams, better products, and more importantly, happier and more comfortable team members.
