I’ve decided to leave Twitter after 14 years of calling it my favorite social network.
I know some will say I don’t need to announce it but, this post isn’t for those people…those are not my people. This is for my friends, my colleagues, my peers, and anyone who comes searching for me wondering why my profile seems so barren.
I joined Twitter back in November 2008. I’ve met truly incredible people here. Unfortunately, the glory days are gone. It started shortly before Trump and got much worse after. Now, racists and bigots feel too safe and too comfortable, misinformation is rampant, and people who probably shouldn’t have a platform, are using it to promote violence and sow division among us.
I came to realize that I now feel there is more to hate about Twitter now than there is to love about it. Under Elon’s watch, I don’t see this getting better, I see it getting worse.
Elon will not be good for Twitter, and he certainly won’t save it…we’ve already seen the evidence. His remarks about free speech on Twitter are total BS. Even he doesn’t believe it, or worse, believes it but doesn’t see the irony as he bans those who are mean to him.
So, this is my Twitter goodbye. I’m not telling you to leave. I’m telling you what I’m doing, why I’m leaving, and where to find me. I just deleted nearly 45,000 tweets. I don’t want any of my stuff up here anymore, helping this site generate even one extra impression they might attempt to monetize.
I’m leaving this profile up in the hopes that I’m wrong and that things will one day change. I’ll see you once again on Twitter when it becomes a kinder, safer place to be.
