Why do we have weekly design critiques?
The goals of weekly design critiques are to:
- Share everybody’s weekly progress -- it’s your time to shine!
- Receive feedback from peers and mentors
- Learn from others
What do we do during group crits?
For those presenting their work
- At the beginning, give context about how exactly your current design work is different from last week. This will help everybody focus on only the new changes, rather than rehashing old work.
- If possible, walk us through how a real user would actually interact with your design solution and explain any goals your design seeks to achieve.
- Everything is always a WiP so poll the audience about any design issues and challenges that you’re still hung up on. We’re all here to help and offer possible solutions!
- Ask for feedback about what anything specific or overall
- Is there anything specific you feel like you need to improve upon and need advice?
- It can be anything ranging from becoming better at animation to figuring out which design tools to use for XYZ
- Write down your feedback! It’ll be super helpful to reflect on this early on as you see your design work progress throughout the cohort.
For those in the audience
- Give quality, constructive feedback. We’re all on the same team!
- In addition to pointing out what can be improved, make feedback ACTIONABLE by suggesting HOW they might actually elevate their design
- Consider asking questions about the methodologies behind their design
- Why did you do X instead of Y?
- What motivated you to _______?
- Think about edge cases
- Are there parts of the user experience that might become fragmented?
- How could users be confused by this current design?
- If you’re confused about certain details, ask for clarification!
- Are there any nits that can be quickly improved?
