Healthcare is changing and information technology needs to change with it

Practical research on introducing blockchain and implantable NFC chips to tackle today's problems, while preparing for the tomorrow

Writers note

I started this journey in Tel Aviv, a special place where I gained experience in blockchain and open source software development. Due to unfortunate circumstances, I needed to head back to Amsterdam. By accident, I stumbled upon a national difficulty and could not let go of it at this anymore. I soon realised this is the field I have to research, design for and develop in. A pivot was made. This document will guide you through my new research, learnings and reflections.

Introduction

There is 1 in a million chance of you being harmed while travelling by plane. Your chances of being harmed in healthcare are 1 in 300. (WHO, 2018)

Despite the fact that healthcare in the Netherlands scores as third best in the world (GBD, 2018), still every week five patients die because of medical failures in Dutch hospitals (RTL, 2018). Many patients around the world are still being harmed because medical staff fails to track the patients' progress, medications or other assets. Research of the World Health Organization found out that administrative errors account for up to half of all medical errors in primary care.

Current information technologies have improved the situation, but not solved it yet. We need to step our game up. It is time to bring emerging technologies to the table. Start working with new identification methods and transparent information systems to solve today's and tomorrows problems. The knowledge is there, specialists are excited, and medical-tech business is booming. In this research, we will find out how patient data can be empowered by leveraging emerging technologies.
