Step 1

Create a content area on your Blackboard page titled “online lectures” or the week number.

Step 2

In this area, create one content folder titled the number of the week or the number of the lecture. In the folder description, add your estimation of time to be spent on preparatory work and any deadlines. Add a date and time for a live meeting if any.

Step 3

Access the content folder and create a new item with written instructions or an instructional video that guides students in how to proceed and what to expect of the lecture or week. For the instructional video, use Zoom and add the video to the item.

Number the item number 1.

Step 4

Add a new item that describes any required readings. Number the item number 2.

Step 5

Finally, set up the lecture adding a new item, which you number “3. Lecture and date”. The lecture can be a live lecture or a pre-recorded lecture.

  1. For a live lecture, use Zoom. Let students know that they are muted and with no opportunity to present themselves using video. Let the students know that they can engage using the chat function in Zoom and that you will read the chat every 15 minute or so and answer the questions. Also let the students know when there will be breaks.
  2. For a pre-recorded lecture, use the Panopto tool to create a video in which you talk over your lecture slides. Break the lecture into short recordings covering one topic each. Each recording should be no longer than 10 minutes. Number the short lectures and provide a short description of the topic covered.

Step 6

Create a new item with a quiz or quizzes as check-outs that give the students and yourself feedback on the learning outcome of the lecture. Use Blackboard Test (students are identified), Blackboard survey (students are anonymous), or Mentimenter (anonymous) to assess student understanding. An alternative could be an assignment where students provide peer-feedback to each other. Use Peergrade in Blackboard for this. Remember to number the item, add a deadline and instructions on the follow-up.

In the end, your Blackboard page might look something like this:
