Negotiate Up! is a Financial Divas Group course dedicated in helping Latina women learn the necessary tactics, skills, and steps in negotiating a salary increase so they can in return help their families and communities move up within the economic and social status.
There is a pay gap between men and women in the workplace, but it is much prominent within minority women of color especially among Latinas.
While caucasian women made .82 cents per every dollar a caucasian man earned, Latina women earned .57 cents per the same dollar (2015).
Unfortunately, if this trend persists, it will
take 227 years from now
for Hispanic women to receive equal pay for the same labor -
Institute for Women’s Policy Research.
The gap is the lack of knowledge in the “how” and “why” & the experience in negotiating their salary.
We want to empower Latina women to feel confident in negotiating and increasing their wages. By the end of the course, Latinas will be able to implement and utilize their skills to negotiate higher salaries within their current roles.

To build the course, I used the ADDIE, Backward Design, Gagne’s Steps and Kirkpatrick Instructional Design Models.
Because FDG is aiming for working Latinas to use the negotiating skills learned, I focused on andragogy and experiential learning with real life scenario role-playing assignments and interactive knowledge to provide them the opportunities to practice the negotiating skills.
Since Latinas mainly consumed their content mobile-first, we opted to use The Heights Platform which provides a mobile-rich experience and a mobile responsive design.
I wanted to make sure that this course was immersive and inclusive, so I utilized video, interactive/immersive modules, audio, pdf, digital quizzes & interactive forms, spotlight interviews, an interactive website, and more.
The Media Components in Negotiate UP
To engage the students, and because it is highly utilized among workers, I wanted to focus on community building by creating a Slack channel for conversations and the FDG Padlet board to store their assignments & provide feedback to their fellow classmates.
Because these topics can become overwhelming, and I know the importance of concept transfer to the students, I tied the entire course with an avatar, Sophia. Sophia needs helps with understanding how to negotiate and our students help her answer questions. Sophia faces a few scenarios that allow us to hone in on key topics.
