An Elymian stronghold that flourished the 6th and 5th Centuries B.C.E.. Segesta sided with Carthage (the Phoenicians) and began rivalries with the residents of Selinunte. Segesta requested Athenian aid against Selinunte 545 and 414 B.C.E., but still began to lose power. So, Segesta abandoned its ties with Carthage and sought an alliance with Carthage’s enemy, Rome. Since, the Elymi shared a mythological kinship to Rome, through Venus (mother to Erice and Aeneas) the Romans forgave the Elymi for initially siding with Carthage. Segesta prospered under Roman rule until 12th Century, then the site fell under Islamic rule and became known as Calatabaro. The Islamic/Norman rule of Sicily can be seen through architecture, colors, and culture!
