In the SPECULATION collection, I have sought to express my thoughts on how we, as human beings, ought to live. This inquiry considers both our existence as a species adrift in the vastness of the universe and our lives as individuals shaped by relationships within society. From both perspectives, I aim to move beyond the boundaries of nationality, race, religion, or gender and to question whether such divisions remain meaningful when we reflect on the essence of our shared human existence.

I have come to see the process of speculation as corresponding to the acts of encoding and decoding within a digital environment. The works in this collection involve decoding what has been encoded within me through reflection, translating it into language, and then further breaking it down into the smallest digital units. These units are mapped one-to-one onto single pixels, the most fundamental elements of digital images, and ultimately re-encoded into a visual form. In this sense, the image becomes the message itself.

Just as the knowledge, emotions, and experiences encoded within us may acquire meaning or enduring value through reflection, which acts as a form of decoding, I hope that my work may likewise attain meaning through the contemplative process of decoding undertaken by each individual viewer.

SPECULATION 컬렉션에서는 국가, 인종, 종교, 성별 등을 떠나 이 광막한 우주 속 지구라는 행성에 존재하는 하나의 인류로서, 그리고 이 지구라는 세상 안에 살아가는 인간으로서 우리는 어떻게 살아가야 하는가에 대한 저의 생각을 담아보고자 합니다.

저는 ‘사색(speculation)’의 과정이 디지털 환경 속에서 이루어지는 인코딩과 디코딩의 행위와 일치한다고 생각했습니다. 이 컬렉션의 작품들은, 제 안에 인코딩되어 있던 것들을 사색을 통해 디코딩하고, 그것을 언어로 치환한 뒤, 그것을 디지털 환경 기반의 가장 작은 단위로 쪼개어 디지털 이미지의 가장 작은 구성 요소인 1픽셀 단위로 1:1 대치하여 최종적으로 디지털 환경 기반의 이미지로 인코딩한 것들입니다. 즉, 그 이미지는 곧 제가 전하고자 하는 메시지 그 자체입니다.

내가 알고 있는 지식이나 느끼고 경험한 것들 즉 내 안에 인코딩 된 모든 것들에 대해 생각이라는 디코딩 과정을 거쳐야만 비로소 의미있는 기억 또는 가치로서 남듯이, 저의 작품이 많은 분들에게 디코딩 될 수 있기를 바라는 마음입니다.
