About

By Stella Botes

The six digital drawings of 'Pink Long Ears...' by Eva Beresin show the artist in a self-portrait at her dressing-room mirror. She is naked and messy-haired, her long pink fingernails playing distractedly with her coffee cup, her perfume. But like all of Beresin's work, this is no normal domestic scene, as a little pink creature climbs the far wall, appearing and disappearing. Here is where Beresin introduces the horror; her characters at first glance appear childish, Seuss-ian, but the artist has punctuated her paintings with small demons, stretching features into hound-dog eyes and grimacing smiles. We are drawn to these figures who openly live the ugliness of life, the drama of daily existence. Even in these digital drawings we get a sense of the thick impasto style of Beresin's oil paintings, a technique which reflects the density of feeling in her work. They are packed with drama, with surprise, suspense and stagnation, as Beresin shows that horror can be just as enchanting as heaven.
