IslamicFamily is a responsible zakat steward that distributes fidya, zakat-ul-fitr and zakat-ul-mal to those in need in Edmonton according to the IslamicFamily’s Zakat policy. IslamicFamily strives to use objective consistent sources when making decisions on Fidya and Zakat.

The goal of this document is to show an empirical and transparent method for determining fitr and fidya that is based on objective data.

Zakat-ul-Fitr [$13.89]

Zakat-ul-Fitr is the equivalent to 2.2 litres of a staple crop, like rice. This is based on the most current data from the Government of Alberta’s Retail Food Prices report.

Fitr Calculation

Fidya [$16.40 per day]

Fidya is the expiation for not fasting, and is equivalent to the cost of a day’s food. This is based on the most current data from the Government of Alberta’s Nutritious Food Basket cost of feeding an adult male for one day as.

Nutritious Food Basket Prices for Edmonton ($) for an 18 year old male/ days per week (7) x credit card processing fee) x Inflation Rate (CPI).
