As if the size it used on an iPhone was Facebook’s biggest problem, the social network this week announced an updated version of its Messenger app that eats up a lot less space on Apple’s smartphones.
Facebook has decided to put its iPhone app on a diet last year at the F8 conference as part of a project codenamed LightSpeed. The idea behind the whole thing was to reduce how much storage Messenger requires on an iPhone, especially as its size increased from a little over 8MB back in 2012 to no less than 130MB for the current version.
The simplified version of Messenger, which the social network claims it redeveloped from scratch, reduces the size it requires on an iPhone to just 30MB, while also bringing substantial improvements in terms of speed.
Loads twice as fast as the previous version
Facebook Messenger should now load faster, the social network says, also thanks to its core code being reduced by no less than 84 percent. The app now has only 360,000 lines of code versus 1.7 million on the previous version.
“Fewer lines of code makes the app lighter and more responsive, and a streamlined code base means engineers can innovate more quickly. As part of the rebuild, a few features will be temporarily unavailable, but we’re working to bring them back soon,” Facebook explains.
At the same time, the new Messenger app is simpler, which in turn allows for further improvements to be added in the coming updates much easier.
“We’ve streamlined the app while keeping it rich with features and making it easier for our engineers to build better experiences. For example, we’ve reduced the contact list from 40 versions to one that works consistently across the app. This not only helps with the cognitive load for people, but it also means engineers don’t need to build new experiences from the ground up,” the social network says.
