Overview

Xbox models from Xbox One forward have built-in screen recording and streaming functionality. There are two reliable strategies for capturing gameplay videos on an Xbox One. One is through the Capture & Share function, and the other is by streaming via the Twitch app. For older (pre-2013) models, you will need a capture card or other workaround. See Universal Solutions for more detail.

Capture & Share

Capture & Share uses Xbox’s built-in recording and storage functionality to create and save videos of your gameplay. They can be up to an hour long, depending on how much storage space you have. We recommend recording to an external USB drive. You then transfer those videos to desktop by plugging the USB drive into a computer or using or Xbox Live and Windows 10.

Setup (External USB)

  1. Plug an external USB drive into your Xbox One. The drive needs to be USB 3.0 and formatted as NTFS. You can reformat it with your PC, if you’re not sure it’s NTFS-formatted.
  2. Select Use for Media, if prompted with a choice.
  3. Press the Xbox button on your controller, then select Profile & System > Settings > Preferences > Capture & Share.
  4. Select Capture Location and then select External to set your USB drive as your default space for saving game clips and screenshots.

Setup (Xbox Live)

  1. Videos saved to your Xbox’s internal storage are automatically uploaded to Xbox Live, but if you need to set that up manually, press the Xbox button and go to Profile & System > Settings > Preferences > Capture & Share and select Automatically Upload.
  2. There is a limit of 10 GB of captures that can be saved, and you’ll need to delete some to make room if it gets full.
  3. Any clip that gets no views in 30 days will be automatically deleted.
