Every country seems to have its own version of a dumpling, and World Dumpling Index was created with the intentions of highlighting those dumplings AND attempting to stretch the definition of a dumpling.
Wikipedia defines dumplings as:
“a broad class of dishes that consist of pieces of cooked dough (made from a variety of starchy sources), often wrapped around a filling. The dough can be based on bread, wheat or other flours, or potatoes, and it may be filled with meat, fish, tofu, cheese, vegetables, or a combination. Dumplings may be prepared using a variety of cooking methods and are found in many world cuisines.”
However, it’s clear there’s debate over how to define a dumpling because there’s an entire section dedicated to the definition of a dumpling right below the initial summary.

Attempting to remain strict with the definition of a dumpling is illogical at best since the culinary world has expanded beyond countries, cultures, and cooking styles. If we restrict one thing solely because it is fried or baked, we can look to another country and see an “officially” defined dumpling that is also fried or baked.
The topic of dumplings around the world isn’t a new concept, but with this project we decided to deliberately stretch the definition of dumpling as far as possible to break free of this strict dumpling ideology.
Of course, we’re just 2 people and don’t plan on talking over people who believe otherwise. We included a voting system and a feedback form just for that purpose! If anyone disagrees with us or a dumpling listed on the page, they may vote against it and even write to us using the feedback form if the vote doesn’t satisfy them enough.
This project did have a lot of planning going into it, but majority of the final product is a result of the choices we made during the process (while researching or coding).

Since this is a Connections Lab assignment with a set amount of time to work on it, we had to carefully decide the goals for this initial version of the project.
Highest Priorities:
Possible Other Features:
The initial idea was extremely ambitious to begin with. This is a project we plan on continuing after the class, so it’s hard to not start dreaming of the endless possibilities to add for it with infinite time.
However, for MVP we decided to ensure we knocked out the highest priority elements first and integrate the other features either with easier methods (Google Forms instead of our own form) or pushing it to the side for later down the line.
