If you're reading this, it means we'll be working together soon! I'm really excited to get to know you and your teams and I hope this guidebook helps you understand me a bit better before we get started. Though this handbook may seem quite formal at first, I'm quite relaxed in real life (see "Humble / Down-to-earth" point below!).
Operating approach
These are the basics of how I like to operate. In general I like to keep things predictable and regular when it comes to operations.
Weekly or bi-weekly 1:1s
- Let's check in at a consistent time every week to review progress and share updates. We'll keep a joint 1:1 doc to track our agendas, actions, goals, and updates.
Weekly team meetings, as necessary
- These meetings are for updates, review, and decision-making. Everyone should come prepared to participate.
Quarterly and annual planning sessions
- "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail" is something I take to heart. You and I will have ample time to prepare for these planning sessions. Generally, we'll review the previous quarter/year's outcomes, clarify upcoming goals, celebrate wins, and dissect failures.
Your career goals
- One of my jobs as a manager is to help you move ahead in your career. Periodt! Thus, I really want to understand your prior work history, why you do the work you do, and where you hope to go in the future. This will help me position you for success in the company and in the future. We'll do a career goals check-in at some point in our first few months of working together.
Your personal goals
- You and I both have lives and goals outside of work. I'd love to learn what you aspire to in your personal life and see if we can help you achieve those goals. We'll check in every 3-6 months to see how you're doing; I will also share my personal goals with you.
Your teams
- I'd like to get to know your teams as soon as possible, and would love to personally meet everyone within my first 30-60 days. Please help me make sure I don't miss anyone!
- Please add me to emails or forward message threads and documents that will give me insight into how your team works and operates on the day-to-day.
- Share your teams' wins with me. If someone does an outstanding job on something, please share the work with me. I am happy to meet with people who do outstanding work so that they can walk me through it.
