About 60% of Americans sleep on some sort of spring box mattress. Only 3% sleep on a futon. That’s a 20x difference! However we didn’t always do that. In fact, the modern mattress is a brand new addition to our nightly routine compared to how long we’ve been on this planet. This means we've been sleeping on mattresses for less than a century compared to the give or take 300,000 years we’ve been on earth. Before this we slept on harder surfaces.
