In our practices, we aim to balance the needs of individuals and the collective. To respect the needs of individuals, we strive for our practices to be simple, universal and as few as possible. When we need to add a practice, we take the time to build consensus, address individual concerns, and make sure the new practice works for different work and communication styles. We review our practices using periodic retrospectives, editing when needed, and simplifying when possible.

To respect the needs of the collective, we expect that practices are followed by everyone and at all times. This is accomplished by explicitly defining our practices, and by gently reminding one another when a practice is not followed. For example, if someone asks a question in a private Slack message that could be communicated transparently, you might ask "Would you mind if I respond to this in the #team-engineering channel?".
