🪨 The School of Rocks rides are mixed terrain rides with a gentle progression in difficulty.

😊 The most important thing is that you ride on a bike that is safe, comfortable and enjoyable to ride. While you might not own a 'gravel bike' (whatever they are anyway) your old mountain bike might be the best thing to ride and inspire confidence as you're learning.

What is a gentle progression in difficulty?

In the first couple of weeks the rides take in gentle gravel sectors, the gravel is fine and the gradients are gentle. These routes are suitable for most bikes including touring bikes, hybrids, mountain bikes, cyclocross bikes and so-called 'gravel bikes'.

Can I ride a road bike?

If the weather has been dry then you may also be comfortable riding a road bike for the first couple of rides. Consider what width your tyres are, wider tyres with a bit of grip might be ok for Weeks 1 & 2. This all depends on your skill and confidence level as well as where you live and the type of terrain. If in doubt, ask us!

Can I ride a hybrid bike? Like the one I use for the weekly shop

Absolutely! Hybrid bikes are great! They tend to have wider tyres that are more puncture resistant. The flat handlebars are also great for stability off road. If your tyres don't have a lot of grip then riding in mud could be tricky. Feel free to ask in the group for advice on tyres.

All off-road bikes such as cyclocross, mountain bikes and 'gravel bikes' (whatever they are!) are perfect.

🧠 While these are led rides you are responsible for yourself and your own safety. Check that your bike is safe before joining each ride. The M check is a quick and easy way to check your bike is ready to ride
