When you hear the words "Artificial Intelligence", what are the first four things that come to your mind?
1.AlphaGo defeating Lee Sedol and Ke Jie was probably the first time I ever heard about AI.
2.Artificial Intelligence like Chatgpt that can answer everything and can even chat with you and make friends with you
3.Artificial Intelligence applys to cars so comes the autonomous vehicles
4.absurd AI-generated videos that have gone viral on social media — like the one where Trump even posted a video of himself flying a plane and dumping poop on protesting Americans.

Sometimes when I’m chatting with my friends, I casually mention certain things, like an actor or a random topic, without ever searching for it on my phone. Later, I start seeing related videos or posts on social media. It feels strange to me and makes me feel like my phone is listening to me or monitoring my conversations.
Take a moment to see if you can identify what function AI plays in the following list. If you get lost, go back to the examples of AI In Action on page 17.
| DEVICE OR DIGITAL
| SERVICE WITH AI | AI FUNCTION(S) |
|---|---|
| Email inbox | virtual assistants & spam filtering |
| Check depositing | handwriting recognition & facial recognition |
| Texting and mobile | |
| keyboards | handwriting recognition & conversational systems |
| Netflix | recommendation engine |
| Google (search function) | recommendation engine&conversational systems |
| Social media platforms | |
| (Instagram, Facebook, | |
| Twitter, etc) | recommendation engine & facial recognition & conversational systems |
| Automated message systems | virtual assistants & conversational systems |
What do we gain by having AI in our everyday lives?
I think what we mostly gain is convenience. A lot of things just become faster and easier without us really noticing—like recommendations, navigation, spam filtering, or automatic replies. AI takes over many small decisions and repetitive tasks, so we don’t have to think about them all the time. At the same time, it also changes how we experience everyday life. Things feel more personalized and responsive, what we gain is a smoother, more optimized daily routine—along with a feeling that our lives are constantly being processed in the background.
What do we lose by having AI in our daily lives?
I think what we lose is a sense of agency and uncertainty. When AI systems constantly predict, recommend, and optimize things for us, we don’t have to make as many small decisions ourselves. Over time, that can make our choices feel less intentional and more guided by invisible systems.
We also lose some privacy and randomness. Our behaviors get tracked, categorized, and turned into data, and that process often happens without us fully noticing it. Everyday life becomes more predictable and efficient, but also more monitored and less surprising.
So what we lose isn’t something obvious or dramatic—it’s more like a slow shift in how much control and ambiguity we’re willing to give up in exchange for convenience.
Use the prompts below to help design an AI system.
| WHAT PROBLEM ARE YOU TRYING
| TO ADDRESS ? | Many automated systems send constant notifications and messages, which makes it hard to tell what actually requires attention and what can be ignored. This often creates stress and notification fatigue. |
|---|---|
| HOW CAN AI HELP | |
| SOLVE THIS ISSUE? | AI can help by organizing and prioritizing messages based on context, urgency, and user feedback, instead of treating all notifications as equally important. |
| WHAT ROLE WILL | |
| HUMANS HAVE IN | |
| ADDRESSING | |
| THIS ISSUE? | Humans would define what “important” means to them, give feedback on missed or irrelevant messages, and be able to override or adjust the system’s decisions at any time. |
| WHAT DATA DO YOU | |
| NEED TO CREATE AN AI | |
| TO HELP YOU ADDRESS | |
| YOUR ISSUE? | The system would need metadata from messages such as sender type, timing, keywords, and simple user responses like “important,” “not important,” or “remind me later.” |
| HOW WILL YOU | |
| RESPONSIBLY GATHER | |
| THIS DATA IN A WAY | |
| THAT RESPECTS | |
| INDIVIDUALS’ PRIVACY | |
| AND CONSENT? | Data would be collected through explicit opt-in, focusing only on message metadata rather than message content. Users would be able to review, correct, or delete their data at any time. |
Now that you have your AI systems framework, take a moment to draw your system. This can look like a flow chart, or be a drawing of what you think the system will look like and where it will live. It’s up to you! Try to be creative. Use the box below to design your prototype system.
