Typography is useful for conveying a message to an audience as there are many different things that it can effect: the typography will affect the readability of a design, an essential part of design being that the audience can understand the message being conveyed.

fonts can help convey a specific tone or mood, helpful for different genres of writing.

readability

Font style can also affect how a body of text is read, serif fonts are often used for headings - to draw the readers attention, where sans-serif fonts are used for body text as they are simpler and easier to read

Letter spacing is

contrast - weight, colour

Layout

Using hierarchy can help to highlight what information is the most important, by having it be larger it will draw the audiences attention first.

Alignment and spacing - use of columns, working within a grid pattern

asymmetry and symmetry

font size - being aware of where the text will be being viewed and accounting for it in design

A few artists that I found inspiring were:

Letterforms

Wolfgang weingart - Weingart using letters to create a design rather than just being focused on the text - modifying and combining different letters to create geometric designs.

jan Tschichold - a typeface designer that created more abstract and modern fonts, used sans-serif and geometric designs more suited for printing, and using asymmetry for layout.

Josef muller-brockman - layout - grid systems.
