The Designer will create and maintain visuals for Cita’s catalog, social media, and promotional materials. They will also create and maintain design templates for Cita contributors and partners, including Cita Studio projects. They will be an integral part of a small, flexible team focused on publishing and celebrating feminist books, design and educational content, and will play an important role in projects related to the organization’s long-term sustainability and growth.
This position is structured as a renewable contract position with one-year term under Cita Press’ three-year Mellon-funded project Cita Press: Scaling Small. This initial contract will help us determine long-term staffing needs related to the work outlined here, and we anticipate that the person in the role will collaborate with us in identifying future plans for this or related positions. As a contract position, it is open to candidates globally; benefits are not included due to the structure of the position.
Scope of Work
- Art direct the work of cover designers for up to four Cita Press book covers; work with the Design Director to assure Cita’s library demonstrates high-quality and innovative design standards
- Collaborate with the Editorial Director to produce visuals and maintain visual identity for social media, study guides, promotional documents, and other externally-facing materials. Specifically, this may involve: (1) Providing design support for supplemental materials for up to three Cita Press books. Formats may include a printable study guide, miniature zine, and/or infographics. (2) Creating visual content for Cita Press' social media platforms aimed at ensuring consistency with our brand's visual identity and messaging, while also optimizing for engagement and audience growth. Content will be posted weekly, up to five video or image posts per week, and (3) Assisting with the development and design of merchandise and other promotional products, including those related to Cita Press’ membership and sponsorship programs.
- Contribute graphic and editorial design for up to three print books or book-length projects for Cita Press titles or Cita Studio projects.
- Create cover images, illustrations, and infographics for up to three Cita Studio client projects.
- Research and help recruit potential designers for Cita Press publications and partner projects, including contractors for future client projects through Cita Studio.
- Update and manage Cita’s design templates.
- Liaise with staff and Web Development Contractor on design elements of website updates (as needed).
- Help represent Cita Press design team in virtual and in-person events and meetings (up to three in-person events; weekly check-ins with Cita team; other meetings tbd).

Requirements
- An interest in literature, book design, and open-source work.
- Hands-on experience with design and image editing software, including but not limited to: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Figma.
