It was published in the United States the next year by Scholastic Corporation under the title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. It won most of the British book awards that were decided by kids and other awards in the US. The book arrived at the highest point of the New York Times list of best-selling fiction in August 1999 and stayed close to the first spot on that list for quite a bit of 1999 and 2000. It has been translated into at any rate 73 other languages, and has been made into a full length film of the same name, as have each of the six of its sequels. Most reviews were entirely good, remarking on Rowling's creative mind, humor, simple, direct style and smart plot construction, albeit a couple of grumbled that the last chapters seemed rushed. The composing has been contrasted with that of Jane Austen, one of Rowling's number one authors; Roald Dahl, whose works ruled kids' stories before the presence of Harry Potter; and the Ancient Greek story-teller Homer. While some commentators thought the book looked backwards to Victorian and Edwardian life experience school stories, others thought it put the class solidly in the cutting edge world by including contemporary moral and social issues, as well as defeating obstacles like bullies.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, alongside the rest of the Harry Potter series, has been assaulted by some religious groups and prohibited in some countries because of accusations that the novels advance black magic under the guise of a brave, moral story. Other religious commentators have composed that the book exemplifies significant viewpoints, including the force of self-sacrifice and the ways wherein individuals' decisions shape their personalities. The series has been used as a source of practical illustrations in instructive techniques, sociological analysis and advertising.
