📚 What is a MetaGame Playbook?

These are being written in a context of On-Boarding/Leveling up in relation to Web3 (DAOs and Crypto inclusive of course).

These spaces can be dizzyingly confusing and represent a massive ‘Warren’ (network of rabbit tunnels) of digital ‘Rabbit Holes’. 🐇

When choosing to write a Playbook, you must consider the reason and value of writing it. The most important thing to keep in mind is “Be Deliberate” about your drives, reasons and context.

Some other helpful reminders to keep in mind:

• You are introducing someone to one opening into the Warren. You are showing them how to begin venturing into there, encouraging them, helping them look inside (by teaching them something useful about it) and encouraging them to fall deeper.
• You are providing a useful quick map of a route that they can follow to achieve a specific thing.

It’s hard to talk about Rabbit-holes without reference to good ol’ Alice in Wonderland. This is exactly how web3 feels sometimes...

So what are the defining characteristics of a Playbook in this context? 🤔

Content and Style:

• It is framed with regard to relevance, specific to Web3 spaces.
• Using a direct and minimalist approach but in a friendly, enjoyable language. Don’t hesitate to use swearing but don’t overdo it and don’t be disrespectful of your readers.

Format:

• Aims to be as quick a read as possible (ideally no more than 800 words), while leveling up a newcomer or acting as an ongoing reference for anyone.

• Images, charts, tables, diagrams can be used as long as they are simple to understand and serve to aid understanding more efficiently than words alone could. Memes are more than welcome!

  If you need help with any visual aids do not hesitate to ask around in the artists’ or designers’ guild, because images are helpful to break up the content and give viewers additional context.

• Add a brief Glossary to your Playbook for overly technical terms, preferably at the start. Alternatively, make sure to clearly define any obscure terminology before making use of it in the rest of the text.

• Minimal links should be used. Any links that are used should be ‘non-essential’ wherever possible and presented as such (inside brackets) or stated openly. Why? Because the aim is a fast A to B upgrade for the reader. In this age of information overload and in such a confusing space everyone is prone to distraction and meandering. Aim to keep your readers on the page till the end, which comes directly and with a satisfying sense of closure.

  💡 A good idea can be to have a Further Reading bit at the end followed by your links. That way, your work is done and now the invitation to go further is presented. Be mindful also, that as links break, things get moved etc, the more links, the more ongoing management will be required...
