Why read the story vertically? Smartphones have limited screen sizes so often the overlapping panels may be hard to read and oftentimes, you have to zoom in and out of a page to see the details. However, in a webtoon-style comic, panels are arranged vertically to accommodate for the smaller display size.
The placement of characters and dialog is deliberately spaced
The space between panels is used for dramatic effect. For example, depending on the size of the space between panels, the perception of the action changes. Large spaces can be used to indicate scene changes.
