The Basics

If you are not a resident of Australia, in order to take part in Melbourne Fringe you will need a visa that allows you to work in Australia. Then the most appropriate visa to apply for is the Temporary Activity Visa (subclass 408). This visa allows you to stay in Australia for a maximum of 3 months.

For the 2024 Melbourne Fringe Festival we recommend you submit you visa application by 10th July 2024 at the latest. It can take a while to arrange all the necessary paper work, so get started on your visa application long before this – don’t leave it to the last minute!

Please note this resource is a guide only, Melbourne Fringe is not responsible should your visa application be unsuccessful.

Remember to check the Official Department of Home Affairs website for up-to-date information.

How can Melbourne Fringe help?

Our Participant Services team can help by providing you with a personalised letter of support confirming your participation in the Festival. It is up to you to apply for the visa yourself though. To request a letter of support for your visa application, please email [email protected] Please note: You must have completed and finalised your Melbourne Fringe registration before a letter of participation can be provided.

How much will it cost?

Because of your participation in Melbourne Fringe, the standard visa fee of $315 can be waived with the use of our ACNC Charity Registration. If you are performing at other festivals/organisations during your time in Australia please consult these organisations directly. If the other festivals/organisations are registered charities and can provide evidence of their status, the fee will also be waived. If you intend to participate in any festivals or events that are not registered ACNC charities, a fee of approx. $315 AUD per person will apply regardless of your involvement with Melbourne Fringe.

Please note you will need to do an application for each individual who requires a 408 Visa – you cannot do one group application. You can however act on behalf of someone – for example, a producer can apply for a visa on behalf of a performer in their group. If you choose this option, you will need to attach a completed **956A form.**
