Human trafficking has been recorded as a serious problem in Africa; it is a major region of origin for victims, who are trafficked into other parts of the world such as Western Europe and the Middle East. (Obokata, 2019)

The numbers of total trafficking victims across the African continent have been on the rise over the years. 2019 had the highest ever recorded number of identified victims with 42,517 persons. (United States of America Department of State, 2020)

However, of that total, labour victims have steadily reduced over the last three years, with a record low of 1,284 persons in 2019. (United States of America Department of State, 2020)

In both the African and global data, the majority of the victims are females with a higher percentage of females in Africa compared to the rest of the global data of victims. There is also a higher percentage of men trafficked from Africa. (Counter-Trafficking Data Collaborative, 2020)

In comparison to global data, Africa’s data shows that the main form of exploitation is labour(53%) compared to 76% of victims who were exploited for sex globally. (Counter-Trafficking Data Collaborative, 2020)

Victims from Africa end up mostly in domestic work (42.6%) while others end up begging (25.9%). Begging in this sense is classified as forced labour in activities related to soliciting donations of money, material goods, or something of value from other people without providing those people with any type of service or good in exchange. 35% of victims trafficked from Africa were male and 65% are female. The highest female age groups are between 21 to 29 years. The highest male age groups are 20 years and below. (Counter-Trafficking Data Collaborative, 2020)
