Reference Image Setup

 1. Import your SVG reference image

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’» Now paste or import your reference image into Figma. Please create a free personal account at https://www.figma.com/, start a new file and just paste the image into this blank canvas

Untitled

 1. Frame your reference image

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’» Create a frame by right-clicking your image and selecting Frame Selection or use the following shortcuts: Option + Command + G (MacOS) or Alt + Control + G (Windows)

Untitled

 1. Duplicate your frame

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’» Duplicate your recently created frame by using the following shortcuts: Command + D (MacOS) or Control + D (Windows)

Untitled

 1. Prepare your second frame

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’» This is the frame you’ll be using to draw your vector sketch in. You can either:

a) Delete the reference image entirely b) Or reduce the reference image’s opacity to use as a guide for sketching (do not line trace the reference image, and make sure to delete the image after you’ve completed your sketch!)

Image deleted from frame

πŸ’‘ You can go to [View] β†’ Frame outlines to display the outline of the frame

πŸ’‘ Please make sure to delete this reference image at 20% opacity before you export!

⚠️ DO NOT LINE TRACE! Draw yourself.

Sketching

 1. Draw a sketch based on the reference SVG image

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’» Settings: Use the Pencil Tool, set the Stroke to 1-3, depending on the size of your frame

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’» The examples below vary in detail from complex to very simple. You need to create a collection of all 4 styles per svg graphic, but you may not line trace the image:

 1. Complex: All line details captured, simple hatching, crosshatching for dark areas (spend less than 60 seconds per svg, if it takes longer, just make it simpler. don’t spend more than 60 seconds)
 2. Medium: All outline details captured, simple hatching (spend less than 30 seconds per svg)
 3. OK: Most basic sketch representation of objects (e.g. human β†’ stick figure) (spend less than 10 seconds per svg)
 4. Childish: Just some quick scribbles (spend a couple of seconds per svg)

Export

 1. Export your sketch

πŸ’‘ Please make sure to delete this reference image at 20% opacity before you export!

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’» Settings: Open an export menu ( bottom right on your right panel) for your sketch frame. Export in the SVG format.
