Prototype a Voice User Interface

With the rise of new technologies the rise of innovative approaches in human-computer interaction can be described. As one example voice user interfaces are making tremendous impact on our everyday life. With this exercise we are going to make our hands dirty in drafting a VUI prototype.

Concept

Most of today’s voice assistances are triggered with a “wake” word, such as “Ok, Google” or “Alexa”. Strealined converstations without the use of such a wake word are technically feasable but highly incorrect. To still create a positive experience without a wake word this concept focuses on Voice Push Notifications that pass over in a dialog with the user.

Take a scenario from everyday life a create a concept for a voice-based push notification. After the notification the user should be able to drill deeper into the information and start a conversation with the assistance. Draw a rough storyboard of your concept.

Create a dialog flow to visualize the trigger of the push notification and the further interaction between user and system. Amazon Alexa’s Design Guidelines provide some input regarding best practices in dialog concepts. Visualize your dialog flow with an approriate tool, such as draw.io / diagrams.net or tortu.io (Tortu is optimized for chatbots, but you can use it to prototype the dialog flow for a VUI, too).

Document your concept including storyboard and dialog flow.
