For this project, we selected the Camry CR 1188, a retro-style radio receiver known for its vintage aesthetics and multifunctional features. Its ability to support AM/FM radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and USB playback made it an ideal object to explore and reimagine for today’s context. Inspired by its timeless design and functional versatility, we sought to preserve the nostalgic charm of the original object.
Our goal was to remain faithful to the original functionality of the radio, which includes browsing through multiple channels. Like the original Camry CR 1188, our design allows users to navigate between channels, mimicking the FM experience. The content includes a curated selection of classic songs from the 1970s and 1980s, sports commentary, and news broadcasts.
To further enhance the authentic experience, we integrated specific auditory elements characteristic of vintage radios. The radio starts with the iconic “static” sound (commonly associated with tuning) and reproduces the same “channel searching” effect when switching between stations. These details create a sense of immersion, connecting users to the tactile and auditory nostalgia of vintage technology.
