Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence but kept slaves throughout his life and thought that blacks were inferior and should be kept segregated. To his credits, he believed that slavery should be ended but in a gradual and controlled manner where slaves should be educated and freed when they become skilled enough to hold employment.
