The Western Ghats, just six hours from Bangalore, are among the world’s most critical ecosystems. Yet for many of us living in the city, they remain out of sight and out of mind. But here’s the truth: we don’t need to escape to faraway places to reconnect with nature. There’s wonder in what’s already around us, in the birds on our balconies, the trees lining our streets, and the monsoon frogs singing in roadside puddles.
Understanding our Backyard (UoB) is a movement that invites city dwellers to slow down, look closer, and rediscover the joy and interconnection of nature, both within the city and beyond. Because what we do here in Bangalore, our habits, systems, and choices, has a direct impact on the health of the Western Ghats, our metaphorical and ecological backyard.
UoB is a shared space for anyone who feels drawn to understand, care for, and live more consciously with the ecosystems that supports us. Ultimately making Nature conservation more accessible.
UoB will unfold through events and activations across Bangalore, at cultural hubs, schools, parks, and community spaces, while building awareness of how urban life connects back to the forests, rivers, and species of the Western Ghats.
For anyone who feels a quiet urge to pay attention again.
If you've ever felt disconnected or disoriented, or if you're simply longing to belong, to place, purpose, and planet, this is for you.
