Understanding Qualifications
Universities in the UK accept a wide range of qualifications. Knowing how yours fit into entry requirements is key to choosing the right course and university.
📚 A-levels
- The most common qualification for UK students applying to university.
- Typically, students take 3 A-level subjects.
- Many courses require specific subjects (e.g., Maths for Engineering, Chemistry for Medicine).
- Grades are usually expressed by universities where they will specify grade combinations (e.g., AAB).
🎓 BTECs
- Vocational qualifications focused on practical, work-related learning.
- Can be taken alone or in combination with A-levels.
- Accepted by many universities, especially for courses with practical elements.
- You may need Distinction or Merit grades depending on the course.
🌍 International Baccalaureate (IB)
- Recognised worldwide and accepted by all UK universities.
- You’ll need to achieve a certain number of points (e.g., 34 overall with 6,6,5 at Higher Level).
- Check subject requirements carefully, especially for HL subjects.
📏 GCSEs
- Most universities require at least Grade 4/C or above in English and Maths.
- Some courses may ask for higher grades or specific subjects (e.g., Science for Nursing).
