User experience research may not be the first responsibility that comes to mind for a developer tooling team - we are developers after all! We know what we want!

Developers are a diverse base of individuals across many languages. It isn't advised to assume your team can accurately represent your entire org, which is why it is recommended to follow classic UX principles.

Find a series of people who can represent the population of your company. You can use the Developer Surveys to find out what types of group there are and use that to form research groups. From these groups, you can run 1:1 to many:many sessions and dive into the more human aspects of software development. Hopefully, you'll come out of it with insights into your organization's inner workings.
