It's more important than ever to have constant, clear communication. But sometimes it's hard to know where to start. Below are examples of communication ideas and conversation starters for chatting with your direct reports. Remember, these conversations aren't "one-and-done". You will need to have these conversations with your direct reports often.
Each parent and caregiver's situation is different, so it’s best to offer support by leading with curiosity and empathy. Ask how they’re doing and how you can best offer support for them. Co-create a solution that allows them to be successful at work and home. Not all situations will require a solution beyond creating a safe place for parents to be heard.
Use these to help understand how you can support your working parents and caregivers. Some conversation starters provided by Know Your Team.
CHECKING ON MENTAL HEALTH:
"I just want you to know I’m here for you. Feel free to message me or give me a call at anytime."
"These are really challenging times for everyone. How can I best offer support for you?"
"How would you describe your level of energy these days?"
PROVIDING WORK-RELATED SUPPORT:
"What does help look like for you? What does help NOT look like for you?"
"What fears or trepidation do you have around the team and/or company, if any?"
"Are there any tasks or projects lately that feel more like a struggle than usual? How can I adjust things to help make that project more manageable right now?"
"Do you feel equipped to do your job well?"
"Am I being respectful of the amount of time you have to accomplish something? Can I be doing a better job of protecting your time?"
