Gathering Information
- Start off your piece by introducing a shocking statistic and reveal its relevance. The best way to strengthen the effect of this statistic is by prefacing the uniqueness/severity of the statistic. Refer to the example below.
- Example: Did you know that 1 in 3 students suffer from chronic fatigue? With over 2.5 million students residing in California, that’s almost 1.7 million students who are suffering from chronic fatigue.
- Example 2: One-sixth of our nation’s budget is spent on weapon’s manufacturing for countries like Israel. Despite our lack of an affordable housing ensured, we are spending over $300 Billion on genocide while it would cost $11 Billion to ensure every American is housed, fed, & educated.
Making your claims
- Anytime you make a claim, use any of the following means of evidence.
- Crunch Numbers: The numbers always talk, compare them to double down.
- Mine is Better Than Yours!: If there is a concept that opposes your own claim, use their weakness to uplift any stats or logic you feel is subjective. Use strong language that is unique to the topic and make sure to define it.
- History Lesson: If there is a pattern of existing traits that support your argument or null the invalidation of your argument then use that.
- Research: This should be your first resort. Always bring strong research to defend your claim.
Effective Structuring
Your body paragraphs should be on-point back to back. Keep your writing precise with transitioning phrases.
- “Despite popular belief” “While XYZ is often said to be ineffective..”
- “On the contrary,” “Furthermore”
- “In conclusion,” “It is evident that..”
