Thyroiditis

The common causes of thyroiditis with thyroid pain and tenderness include:

  1. Subacute thyroiditis (postviral inflammation)
  2. infections (bacterial suppuration)
  3. Radiation thyroiditis
  4. Vigorous palpation- or trauma-induced thyroiditis

Subacute thyroiditis

includes granulomatous, giant cell or de Quervain thyroiditis

main differential is Grave's disease (diff. reduced radio-iodine uptake; later go into hypo)

occur in 4th - 5th decades

could be viral origin, following URTI
