Now that Windows 10X is a real thing, many want Microsoft to bring several of its features to the full version of Windows 10 as well, including the brand-new Start menu that no longer uses live tiles.

While Microsoft doesn’t seem to be willing to go that far, or at least, not yet, a teaser that the company presented during a Windows Insider podcast a few hours ago reveals an updated Start menu design that features a more polished look in the place where live tiles usually are.

Microsoft’s not killing off live tiles, so what it does is actually remove the color blocks that these use in the Start menu for a more refined appearance overall.

It’s not necessarily a major change, but it does simplify the Start menu and allow apps to blend into the overall design in a more seamless way.

No plan to kill off the Start menu live tiles

Brandon LeBlanc, senior program manager at Microsoft, says live tiles are here to stay, so they won’t be going away anytime soon.

“Those that enjoy their live tiles will continue to be able to do so,” he said.

Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean this is the long-term plan anyway. People familiar with the matter said last year that Microsoft considered giving up on live tiles people people don’t use them that much. And at the time, not all developers embraced them in the first place, so many of the apps published in the Microsoft Store come with static icons.

Whether or not live tiles would go away is something that remains to be seen, but for now, it looks like Microsoft just wants to polish the existing Start menu and not go for a more dramatic change and bring the Windows 10X version to the desktop.
