What is the Soil Food Web?

. The Soil Food Web and Nutrient Availability

The soil food web is a complex network of organisms—bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, arthropods, and earthworms—that live in and around the root zone. Each plays a specific role in breaking down organic matter and cycling nutrients.

Microbes transform raw materials into plant-available forms, while predators like protozoa and nematodes release nutrients through their waste. Mycorrhizal fungi extend root systems, accessing distant nutrients in exchange for plant sugars. This biological activity determines how effectively a plant can access essential elements like nitrogen, phosphorus, and micronutrients.

In regenerative systems, feeding and supporting this food web is more effective than applying synthetic fertilisers because the biology tailors nutrient release to plant demand.
