Rogue Subclass — The Gambler
Class: Rogue
Recommended Domains: Grace (charm, deception) & Midnight (secrecy, trickery)
Spellcast Trait: Presence
FOUNDATION FEATURE — Cardsharp’s Edge
Once per rest, when you or an ally within Close range makes an action roll, you may wager on fate:
- Call It. Before rolling, declare High or Low.
- Both you and the ally roll your Hope and Fear dice.
- If your Hope die beats your Fear die and your called result is correct (higher = High, lower = Low):
- Gain +2 advantage on the roll and +1 Hope.
- If your call is wrong, mark 1 Stress and gain no bonus.
You can describe this as a flourish of cards, coin toss, or confident smirk — a moment when the Gambler tempts fate itself.
SPECIALIZATION FEATURE — Double Down
Once per session when you roll with advantage, you may Double Down:
- Cancel the advantage before rolling.
- If the result meets or beats the Difficulty, you succeed with style — clear 1 Stress and gain 1 Hope.
- If you fail, mark 2 Stress and the GM introduces a complication tied to greed, luck, or pride (your tell comes back to bite you).
In addition, whenever you Help an Ally, you may describe a risky assist — tossing a weapon, shouting a bluff, or sliding chips across the table. If the ally succeeds, you both gain 1 Hope.
