What it’s like to be known for something I never asked to carry

By Kimberly L.

“You’re so honest.”

People say it like it’s a compliment.

But I’ve learned it’s often a setup.

I never asked to be known as The Honest One.

It just… happened.

Maybe it’s because I’m bad at lying.

Maybe it’s because secrets make me itch.

Maybe it’s because I’ve been forced to hold too many truths for too many people who never told the truth themselves.

But somewhere along the way, people stopped seeing me as a person, and started treating me like a human polygraph.

“I know Kim’s not gonna lie.”

“If you want the truth, ask her.”

“She can’t keep a secret.”

And suddenly, I wasn’t a friend anymore.

I was a confession booth.

A ticking bomb with a moral compass.

The downside of being known as honest?
