This project aims to design and develop a modular and intelligent water sports equipment stabilizer kit, which provides active balance and stability functions for water equipment such as SUP, kayaks and small fishing boats.
Water sports and recreational activities such as stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), kayaking, and small boat fishing have grown increasingly popular as accessible ways to enjoy water environments. However, through user interviews and observational research, we identified a consistent pain point: stability issues in various water conditions.
Our design thinking process began with empathy research, where we shadowed SUP users, particularly anglers and beginers who need stability and stationary. We observed they frequently struggled with balance when:
The current market offers primarily passive stabilization solutions, typically in the form of outriggers or pontoon attachments. While at some point effective, these solutions present several limitations:
Furthermore, we noted that in situations where users need occasional stability (such as when taking a photograph or making a precise cast) rather than continuous support, the permanent presence of bulky outriggers represents an inefficient solution.
Through ideation workshops and technical feasibility studies, we identified an opportunity to develop an active stabilization system that could provide on-demand stability without the permanence and bulk of traditional passive solutions.
