What are Techniques and Sub-Techniques?

The tactics within the matrix only show attackers' objectives without detailing their methods. Techniques and sub-techniques, however, demonstrate the specific methods attackers use to achieve their goals and execute attacks. Each technique/sub-technique is categorized within the matrix under a particular tactic. As an example, some of the techniques on the enterprise matrix are shown in the image below:

Majority of the Most areas in the matrix above represent techniques. Some techniques have sub-techniques, while others do not.

As shown in the image, gray areas next to technique names in the matrix indicate that the technique has sub-techniques. Let's examine the sub-techniques of the first 4 techniques under the "Reconnaissance" tactic:
