To reduce friction to leverage group pass discounts to make metrolinx transit more affordable starting with the Kitchener to Union Station and back trip.
Group passes for metrolinx are sold, the expectation is the people sharing the pass leave and come back at the same time. It is sold for 2,3,4 or 5 people.
Currently, a WhatsApp group exists where for each train departure and arrival from Kitchener to Union has a group chat. Coordination is managed just through chat, and we want to streamline this process. Since coordination is just done via text, people often coordinate in different ways, causing confusion. It is also hard to parse the messages to figure out what is happening.
These are the 5 stages that passengers go through and coordinate via WhatsApp about.

PRE-PLANNING • show interest in 2 way trip • gauge if other people are interested in the same trip as you • indicate if they’d be comfortable being the steward
PRE BOARD (at 5mins prior) • Since people drop out/ drop in, groups are formed pre boarding (UNDECIDED: how to divide groups into the most fair divisions) • Stewards buy the ticket, and upload screen shot • Group meets up and boards same carriage together
ON BOARD • Since people might not sit next to each other, if a fare inspector shows up the group needs to regroup to show proof of ticket purchase

POST BOARD • Steward gets etransfers from people to pay them back for the ticket

We want to make an app that will streamline the whole process so it is very clear what next actions need to be done as currently all information is parsed in the chat.
