Problem framing

Background

Problem definition

Currently, 66.0 % (PMA2020 SDG indicator, 2020) of the population of Burkina Faso lacks access to sanitation facilities, forcing them to practice open defecation in the land and nearby bodies of water. Untreated human waste is a potential biohazard for human health and it is also highly contaminating for the natural resources that enter in contact with it. The lack of access to sanitation facilities also forces residents to defecate in unsanitary places - thus increasing the risk of entering in contact with infectious pathogens - and it prevents women from having a safe place for practicing sanitary menstruation hygiene. All of these issues are aggravated in the highly impoverished region of Dori.

<aside> ⚠️ It is thus necessary to propose a solution that allows the residents of Dori to have access to sanitation facilities as an alternative to practicing open defecation.
