If you are earning money in Australia, you may be required by law to pay income tax. The tax you pay depends on how much you earn, how often you get paid, offsets you are entitled to, and your tax residency status. Your employer deducts tax from each pay and sends it to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) on your behalf.

If you earn $18,200 of taxable income or less, you may be entitled to claim the tax-free threshold. Working holiday makers and foreign residents may be subject to different tax rates depending on the visa subclass. Please note that working holiday makers are not eligible for the tax-free threshold as of January 2017.

A Tax File Number (TFN) is your personal reference number in the tax and superannuation systems. It is unique, usually 9 digits, and yours for life and throughout different jobs. You cannot be paid without a TFN. Learn more about TFNs here.
