Supporting Someone Struggling With Parenthood

Take a few moments to
- Understand parenting's reality: Recognize that parenthood involves relentless demands, identity shifts, sleep deprivation, and conflicting societal expectations. It often includes mourning previous freedoms while navigating overwhelming responsibility and constant judgment.
- Check your own parenting biases: Notice any tendencies to idealize parenthood, offer unsolicited advice, minimize struggles, or judge their parenting choices, and set these aside to focus on their authentic experience.
- Prepare for ambivalent feelings: Understand that expressing frustration, exhaustion, or occasional regret alongside deep love is a normal part of the complex parental experience, not evidence of being a "bad parent."
- Set realistic expectations: Parenting challenges evolve but don't disappear. Your role isn't to "solve" their parenting struggles but to provide consistent support throughout the ongoing journey of raising children.
