Supporting Someone Struggling With Substance Abuse

Take a few moments to:
- Understand addiction's nature: Recognize that substance abuse is not a choice, moral failing, or lack of willpower. It often involves neurobiological changes, underlying trauma or mental health issues, and complex cycles of shame, relief-seeking, and withdrawal.
- Check your own judgments: Notice any tendencies to view their behavior as manipulative, express frustration with relapse, minimize "functional" addiction, or feel personally betrayed, and set these aside to focus on their medical condition.
- Prepare for ambivalence about recovery: Understand that expressing mixed feelings about sobriety is a normal part of the change process, not denial or lack of commitment.
- Set realistic expectations: Recovery from substance abuse isn't linear and often involves relapse. Your role isn't to "fix" their addiction but to provide consistent support throughout their ongoing journey toward health.
