Surge is a stop-motion video made from a series of 49 cyanotype prints made from still frames of waves crashing, taken from a video recorded during a family holiday. The project reflects on the fragility of memory following a house fire that destroyed many of my family’s possessions and personal archives. Using the historic Cyanotype process, the images are rendered in deep Prussian blue, a colour that evokes both water and the passage of time. By repeating a single fleeting event across 49 prints, Surge becomes an act of reconstruction and an attempt to hold onto fragments of experience in the absence of the physical memories that were lost. The waves themselves act as a metaphor for memory: rhythmic, persistent, and continually reshaping what remains.
