Hi! My name is Surabi Ramamurthy, and I am a sophomore at the University of Maryland, College Park. I’m majoring in computer science with a specialization in cybersecurity and am a part of the College Park Scholars Public Leadership program. Also, I am a member of the University of Maryland’s Hack4Impact chapter, which is a student-led club that creates software and websites for nonprofit organizations.
I joined the College Park Scholars program due to its emphasis on contributing to and serving the community. Throughout high school, I volunteered at a language school and started a tutoring system at my school, so making a difference and helping others is a huge part of my identity, and the Scholars program directly aligns with my values.
Furthermore, I was interested in the public leadership program because of its focus on developing soft skills, which balanced with the technical skills from my major. The program allowed me to understand different leadership styles and how to adapt oneself to work more effectively with a leader. The various colloquium classes also enabled discourse between different perspectives and viewpoints. Most importantly, the classes helped me understand my leadership style, its strengths and weaknesses, and how to improve to become a more effective leader.
