We hear it said over and over that Al-Anon helps us become responsible for ourselves; this includes our finances. Yet seldom do we think of making a will in terms of responsibility. But it is the responsible thing to do if we want our possessions to go to those we care about after we die.
Failing to make a will places our responsibility in someone else’s hands. This can lead to undesirable results, family disputes, or having our assets distributed by the courts and the local government. Most likely we would want to avoid such complications, especially when preparing a will is relatively simple and inexpensive.
A will is our legacy to future generations. When preparing our will, we consider people who are important to us—our families, friends and close associates. We may consider, too, others who have had an influence on our lives, including educational and religious institutions. Some members have designated the Al-Anon Service Center of Tidewater, Inc. (ASCT), in gratitude for the help given by our fellowship during their lifetime.
Just as our founders provided us with the legacy of the Steps, Traditions, and Concepts of Service, we also have an opportunity to provide a legacy of help and hope to other families and friends of alcoholics. One way to do this is by designating a bequest to the ASCT to ensure our program will be there for future generations.
This suggested language will be of use to your attorney in carrying out your wish to create a bequest.
“I give and bequeath to Al-Anon Service Center of Tidewater, 4968 Euclid Road, Suite H, Virginia Beach, Virginia, 23462, the sum of $ (dollars) for its general purpose.”
In keeping with the Al-Anon tradition of self-support, the Al-Anon Service Center of Tidewater may accept bequests only from its own members. Therefore, it would be useful to send a letter to the ASCT office stating that you are a member and that you have made a bequest. No further details are necessary. This letter can confirm membership in Al-Anon when the will is probated.
Al-Anon Service Center of Tidewater, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Our tax number is available upon request. The maximum bequest by members that can be accepted by Al-Anon Service Center of Tidewater, Inc. is $100,000.
